Together Colorado leaders have been working diligently to move many issues of concern related to immigration at the state and local level.

Together Colorado Immigration Faith Statement

“The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I the Lord am your God.”

(Leviticus 19:34)

Our shared theology compels us to love, care for, and seek justice for the stranger among us. As people of various faith traditions, we accept that people of all nations are made in God’s image, ascending beyond the borders of man.

We believe:

  • That all people are made in the image of God. As such, they are worthy of dignity and respect and have much to contribute to the common good.
  • That as people of faith we have a responsibility to love and show compassion for the stranger among us.
  • That immigrants are our neighbors, both literally and figuratively. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves and show mercy to neighbors in need.

We acknowledge that indeed we are a nation of laws, and that laws reveal the character of a nation and its people; therefore those laws should uphold our Divine Law. We commit ourselves to work with all who will join us in urgent and diligent work to restore those laws to once again embody and honor our faith values, contributing to dignity and livelihood for all.

We encourage people of faith to consult and study the policy positions and teachings of their own faith traditions on immigration and other important issues.

Together Colorado believes that a comprehensive immigration reform must be based on the following values:

  • A path to permanent resident status and citizenship must be inclusive, achievable and accessible.
  • Family-based immigration reform must reunite families and reduce immigration backlogs.
  • Higher education must be accessible for immigrant students.
  • Worker programs must protect the rights and dignity of workers.
  • Law enforcement agencies must respect human rights and civil liberties of refugees.
  • There must be a clear plan for integration of immigrants.

Statement from Archbishop Chaput

"Despite all of the heated public argument over the past few years, Americans still find themselves stuck with an immigration system that adequately serves no one. We urgently need the kind of immigration reform that will address our economic and security needs, but also regularize the status of the many decent undocumented immigrants who help our society to grow. A new Congress and a new president serve in Washington. They have an extraordinary opportunity to act quickly and justly to solve this problem." --Archbishop Chaput
