A New Day by Rev. Tony D. Henderson

Matthew 27:57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. {28}

1 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

Joseph gives Jesus his final resting place. It is an act of kindness, honor, and sincerity. The lesson that is transmitted to me is that REAL commitment does not end at death. Just because we have been let down, disappointed or things did not go the way we plan does not mean it is the end. Joseph was a high ranking official but secretly a Jesus follower (That is a whole other story)! Yet when Jesus had need of a burial place Joseph offers it! While it was a religious act, it was done as a response to his relationship with Jesus!

Is this not interesting that he avoided daytime interaction because he and Nicodemus wanted to uphold religious positions? Yet, when (as granddaddy says) the rubber met the road, Joseph refuses to care about consequences from both the religious and secular arena he could face, since Jesus was crucified (according to the Christian Biblical Text) for crimes against Judaism and Rome! The man from Arimathea asks, well the text says, he begged for the body of Jesus! So that the wounded and now dead ‘Savior’ could have a proper burial. Here is a lesson to be learned: true help is done when you are not looking for anything in return.

When we look back at this watershed moment, this was the end. ALL hope was gone and reality had not set in. However, Jesus is now dead, and there are no more miracles to be performed, no more healing to be done, only a funeral to plan. What Joseph saw as an end, Jesus turns into a new beginning. Yes, what Joseph thought and meant to be a final resting place had been transformed into a resurrection place. Perhaps Jesus seeks to do this for you and I! In fact, let’s do this together! What are you holding on to? Give it to Jesus not out of a religious act but because you desire a relationship with Christ! I am a witness that Jesus can and will transform what you thought as the end into a BEAUTIFUL BEGINNING!
