Personal Righteousness Before Organized Righteousness – Elder Norm Davey

We often find ourselves quickly embracing a Cause that seems just and righteous, that we can easily justify and support through a lens of our Faith’s holy scriptures. Even more so if we personally have been touched in some way by the injustice targeted by that Cause. And as we organize around one righteous social justice pursuit after another, we risk embracing the pursuit more fervently and with more time and energy than we embrace our own Faith. In some ways we risk replacing Faith with Works as a priority.

God desires our hearts first, and our righteous works second. I am reminded of Isaiah’s prophetic warning to those who strayed in their faithfulness to God: I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you. (Isaiah 57:12).

Let us instead initiate our embrace of any social justice endeavor with individual time spent in prayer, confession and spiritual renewal – before taking one step into an organized pursuit. Let our God lead, for anything undertaken in God’s name and with a righteous heart will be blessed and provided with Sovereign power. Romans 8:28 & 31 declares: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

It is a comforting and spiritually empowering thought. We can focus on pursuing our personal righteousness and unleash God to pursue the results of any organized righteous Cause.
